The Tourism Club initiative is set up to engage local students to host visiting overseas school groups in Singapore, and to encourage cultural exchange and foster bilateral relationships between the students of the school and the overseas students.
We also hope to groom a pool of student leaders and staff from schools ("Student Tourism Ambassadors") and to increase their awareness of Singapore as a tourist destination and the importance of the tourism industry.
Schools around the world are beginning to realize the importance of international exposure for their students at an early age and have been sending their students on overseas study trips. Many school groups see interaction with our local students as a critical item in their tour itinerary. By having Student Tourism Ambassadors from the Tourism Club to interact with the visiting students, we know that it will definitely help to provide the visiting students an invaluable Uniquely Singapore school experience. We also hope that this early exposure of Singapore Education will entice the visiting students to consider furthering their education in Singapore in later years.
The Tourism Club is a great opportunity to expose the Singapore students to the tourism industry at an early age. Hopefully, by involving the students as tourism hosts, they will be more attuned to the things that are Uniquely Singaporean, and what our visitors find particularly attractive, thereby fostering a stronger sense of belonging to Singapore, and helping to promote Singapore to their foreign friends. By giving the students an opportunity to learn about the tourism industry and its critical success factors, we also wish to expose them to what a career in the industry entails.
Our Student Tourism Ambassadors have participated in our Uniquely Singapore Passport events in November 2004 and more recently, at the launch in April 2005. Their involvement in these programmes aimed to expose them to Singapore's tourism products and the Board's marketing efforts in promoting Singapore as a choice destination for leisure, business, healthcare and education. By involving the Tourism Ambassadors in our STB events, we also hope to enhance their social skills and their confidence in hosting and interacting with overseas visitors.
The objectives of the Tourism Club are:
- To recruit a pool of public schools that are willing and able to receive and host overseas school groups.
- To groom a pool of student leaders and staff as Tourism Ambassadors to host the overseas students and teachers.
- To enhance the experience of visiting students, to encourage cultural exchange, and to foster bilateral relationship.
- To increase the awareness of Singapore students of the Singapore tourism product and its offerings.
- To provide a platform for interaction between local and overseas students and teachers.
